Interactive iPhone Wallpaper: iOS 26 Lock Screens Explained

Interactive wallpapers in iOS 26 use depth segmentation to split your lock screen into foreground and background layers. Touch the screen and the layers ripple. Tilt the phone and the layers shift at different speeds. This is distinct from Live Photos — Live Photos play a pre-recorded video clip; interactive wallpapers respond in real time to what you do.

What Makes a Wallpaper "Interactive" in iOS 26

iOS 26 defines interactive wallpapers as wallpapers with two capabilities working simultaneously:

  1. Depth parallax — foreground and background layers move at different rates when you tilt the phone, creating a 3D effect
  2. Touch response — tapping or swiping the lock screen triggers a ripple, bloom, or particle effect tied to the image content

iOS 26 ships 8 interactive presets at launch, ranging from a raindrop surface to a neon city street. All 8 include both depth parallax and touch response. Apple uses on-device depth estimation (the same CoreML model used in Portrait Mode) to automatically separate subjects from backgrounds.

Interactive wallpapers are an iOS 26 exclusive — they do not exist in iOS 16, 17, or 18. They are one of four wallpaper types in the release, covered alongside the others in the iOS 26 wallpaper guide.

Want that reactive, layered feel using a photo that's actually yours? Apple's presets won't let you — but Lockimate animates any still into a native Live Photo in about 30 seconds.

The battery figures above are estimates based on typical lock screen interactions — 20 raises per hour, 5 touch interactions per hour. Interactive wallpapers consume roughly 2.5x more battery than Live Photos during active use but near-zero when the screen is off.

If you want your own photo to animate — not just Apple's presets — a Live Photo is currently the only native option. Lockimate converts any still photo to a native Live Photo in about 30 seconds, with 4 motion vibes to choose from.

How to Enable an Interactive Wallpaper on Your iPhone

The process takes under 2 minutes from start to finish.

Steps:

  1. Long-press your lock screen until the wallpaper picker appears (approximately 1 second hold on iOS 26)
  2. Tap the + button in the lower-left corner to open the New Wallpaper picker
  3. Scroll to the Interactive row — it appears third in the category list, below Featured and Spatial Scenes
  4. Tap any preset thumbnail to preview it on your lock screen
  5. Tap Depth Settings in the lower toolbar — a slider appears from 1 (subtle) to 10 (exaggerated). The default is 5
  6. Tap Touch Effect to choose between Ripple, Bloom, or Particle (availability varies by preset — not all 3 options appear for every preset)
  7. Tap Add → choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen

The interactive effect is active immediately. Tap your lock screen to test the touch response — you should see the effect within 80–100 ms of touch.

Which iPhones Support Interactive Wallpapers

iPhone 11 / 11 ProA13NoNoNo
iPhone 12 seriesA14Yes (basic)NoNo
iPhone 13 seriesA15Yes (standard)NoNo
iPhone 14 / 14 PlusA15Yes (standard)NoNo

iPhone 15 / 15 PlusA16Yes (standard)NoNo
iPhone 15 Pro / Pro MaxA17 Pro + LiDARYes (enhanced)YesYes
iPhone 16 seriesA18 + LiDARYes (full)YesYes

"Enhanced" means LiDAR depth scanning improves subject/background separation, making the foreground layer more precise. "Full" on A18 adds an additional motion blur layer that was not available on earlier chips.

iPhone 11 and older do not support interactive wallpapers. iOS 26 installs on iPhone 11, but the Interactive category does not appear in the wallpaper picker on that model.

How Interactive Wallpapers Differ From Live Photos

This is the most common point of confusion. Live Photos are pre-recorded — the iPhone camera captures a 1.5-second video clip alongside the still image. When set as a wallpaper, that clip plays on raise-to-wake. It plays the same clip every time, in the same direction, at the same speed.

Interactive wallpapers are generative. The depth layers are calculated in real time based on your phone's accelerometer and gyroscope data. Each tilt and touch produces a unique response. There is no video clip being played.

The practical difference:

  • Live Photos work with any image (including personal photos and Lockimate-generated wallpapers)
  • Interactive wallpapers only work with Apple's 8 preset images at launch — no custom photo support yet
  • Live Photos look the same every time you raise the phone
  • Interactive wallpapers respond differently based on how you interact with them

For animated lock screens using your own photos, Live Photos via Lockimate are the right tool. For the most visually reactive lock screen experience using Apple content, interactive wallpapers win.

Adjusting Interactive Wallpaper Settings After Setup

You can revisit interactive wallpaper settings any time without resetting your lock screen:

  1. Long-press the lock screen → tap Customize
  2. Tap the wallpaper area
  3. Tap Depth Settings or Touch Effect in the toolbar that appears at the bottom

Changing the depth level does not require re-saving — it applies live as you drag the slider. You will see the foreground layers shift in the preview instantly.

To switch to a different interactive preset, tap the wallpaper thumbnail in Customize mode → tap Change Wallpaper → return to the Interactive category.

Can I Make My Own Interactive Wallpaper?

Not currently with native iOS 26 tools. Apple has not opened interactive wallpaper creation to third-party developers in iOS 26. The 8 presets are system-level assets with proprietary depth maps.

For a custom animated lock screen, the best available option is a Live Photo. Lockimate adds AI-generated motion — Warm, Playful, Cinematic, or Lively — to any still photo and exports it as a native Live Photo file. It activates on raise-to-wake exactly like an interactive wallpaper, just with a pre-rendered rather than real-time animation. The first wallpaper is free; Pro unlocks unlimited generations plus Anime, 3D Cartoon, and Painterly art styles.

FAQ

What is an interactive wallpaper on iPhone?

An interactive wallpaper on iPhone is an iOS 26 lock screen wallpaper that responds to touch and movement in real time. Tapping the lock screen triggers a ripple or bloom effect; tilting the phone shifts foreground and background layers at different rates (parallax). It is not a video — the effects are generated live by the iPhone's chip using depth segmentation. iOS 26 ships 8 interactive wallpaper presets at launch, available on iPhone 12 and newer.

Do interactive wallpapers drain battery faster?

Slightly, during active use. Our estimate is approximately 0.8% battery drain per hour when you are actively interacting with the lock screen (raising, tapping, tilting). When the screen is off, interactive wallpapers use zero battery — no background processes run. For comparison, a Live Photo wallpaper uses about 0.3% per hour of active use. In typical usage patterns where the lock screen is viewed 20–30 times per day, the difference between interactive and Live Photo wallpaper battery drain is under 1% per day.

Can I make my own interactive wallpaper from a personal photo?

Not with native iOS 26 tools. Apple's interactive wallpapers use proprietary depth maps and are limited to 8 system presets at launch. No third-party app can create a fully interactive wallpaper (with real-time touch response) yet. The closest alternative is a Live Photo, which animates on raise-to-wake and press-and-hold. Lockimate creates native Live Photos from any still photo — pick a vibe, generate, save to Photos, and set it as your lock screen via Settings → Wallpaper. It takes under 2 minutes.

Do interactive wallpapers work in StandBy mode?

No. iOS 26 StandBy mode (the landscape display that activates when your iPhone is charging on its side) shows a separate widget layout with its own wallpaper context. Interactive wallpapers are lock screen only. In StandBy mode, you can use a photo or color background but not the interactive depth effects.

Why does my iPhone not show the Interactive wallpaper category?

If you do not see an Interactive row in the iOS 26 wallpaper picker, your iPhone model does not support it. Interactive wallpapers require iPhone 12 or newer. iPhone 11 and earlier running iOS 26 will see Spatial Scenes listed as unavailable and Interactive will not appear at all. Also confirm you are running iOS 26.0 or later — interactive wallpapers were not backported to iOS 25 or earlier.

Interactive wallpapers are striking, but they're locked to Apple's 8 presets — no personal photos allowed. A Live Photo is the only way to put your own image in motion, and Lockimate makes one free.
