How to Turn a Video Into a Live Photo on iPhone (3 Methods)
You can turn any video into a Live Photo on iPhone in under 2 minutes using three methods: Lockimate (best for animated wallpapers), intoLive (best for any video clip), or iOS Shortcuts (free, no app needed). All three produce a native HEIC + MOV Live Photo that iOS recognizes and that can be set as a lock screen wallpaper.
Why Convert Video to Live Photo
A video file — MP4 or MOV — cannot be set as a live lock screen wallpaper directly on iPhone. (If your source is animated rather than a video clip, see how to turn a GIF into a Live Photo instead.) iOS requires a genuine Live Photo: a HEIC still paired with a 1.5-second MOV clip, linked via metadata. Converting your video to that format is the only way to get an animated lock screen that moves on raise-to-wake without jailbreaking or workarounds.
The conversion process is not a visual trick. iOS actually reads the metadata, and if it does not see a valid Live Photo pair, the Live toggle in Settings → Wallpaper will not appear.
If your starting point is a photo rather than footage, trimming a video is the wrong tool. Lockimate adds the motion itself and writes a valid Live Photo pair in 15–30 seconds.
Animate a still insteadMethod 1: Lockimate (Best for Still Photos Turned into Animated Wallpapers)
Lockimate takes a still photo, generates a 1.5-second AI animation in a vibe you choose, and saves a valid Live Photo to your library. This is the fastest path if you want to turn a regular photo — not a video you already have — into an animated lock screen.
Steps:
- Open Lockimate and tap + to import a photo from your library or camera roll
- Select an animation vibe: Warm, Playful, Cinematic, or Lively
- Optionally choose an art style — Realistic is free; Anime, 3D Cartoon, and Painterly require Pro
- Tap Generate — processing takes approximately 15–30 seconds
- Tap Save to Photos — Lockimate exports a linked HEIC + MOV pair to your library
- Open Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos, select the image, confirm the Live toggle is yellow, and tap Set Lock Screen
Your first wallpaper is free. Pro unlocks unlimited generations.
Method 2: intoLive (Best for Converting an Existing Video Clip)
intoLive converts any video clip in your library to a Live Photo. It works with MP4 and MOV files. The free tier adds a watermark; the paid version ($2.99 one-time or via subscription) removes it. For a feature-by-feature breakdown, see Lockimate vs intoLive.
Steps:
- Download intoLive from the App Store (free with in-app purchase)
- Tap the + button and select a video from your Photos library
- Trim the clip to 3 seconds or less — Live Photos only store 1.5 seconds of usable motion, so shorter is better. intoLive lets you drag a handle to select the exact 3-second window
- Choose your frame rate (15 fps matches Apple's native Live Photo standard)
- Tap Make Live Photo and wait approximately 10–20 seconds for processing
- Tap Save — the Live Photo saves to your Photos library
- Set as wallpaper via Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos
Supported formats: MP4, MOV, M4V. Maximum input length is the full video, but output is capped at 3 seconds. Videos shot at 4K take slightly longer to process than 1080p.
Method 3: iOS Shortcuts (Free, No App Required)
A community-built shortcut can convert video to Live Photo using only Apple's built-in Shortcuts app. This method is free but requires iOS 16 or later and a one-time shortcut download.
Steps:
- On your iPhone, open Safari and search "Live Photo Shortcut RoutineHub" — install a shortcut that uses the Make Live Photo Shortcuts action
- Open the Shortcuts app and locate the installed shortcut
- Tap the shortcut and follow the prompt to select a video from your library
- Trim or confirm the clip length (aim for 1.5–3 seconds)
- The shortcut saves a Live Photo to your Photos library — this takes 5–15 seconds depending on video length
- Set as wallpaper in Settings → Wallpaper
This method produces a valid Live Photo but has no UI — if the shortcut errors, you will need to troubleshoot the Shortcuts log. It does not support watermark removal or art style selection.
Comparing the 3 Methods
| Method | Cost | Input | Output quality | Lock screen eligible | Ease of use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lockimate | Free (1st), then Pro | Still photo | AI-generated, cinematic | Yes | Very easy |
| intoLive | Free (watermark) / $2.99 | Any video MP4/MOV | Matches source video | Yes | Easy |
| iOS Shortcuts | Free | Any video MOV/MP4 | Matches source video | Yes | Moderate |
How to Set the Converted Live Photo as a Lock Screen Wallpaper
After saving the Live Photo to your library:
- Open Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper
- Tap Photos and select the converted image
- Confirm the Live button in the bottom-left is yellow and active
- Pinch to resize or reposition
- Tap Add → Set as Lock Screen
If the Live toggle does not appear, the file was not saved as a valid Live Photo pair. Re-run the conversion. This most commonly happens when using Shortcuts with an outdated shortcut version. See setting a Live Photo as your lock screen for the full picker walkthrough.
FAQ
Can I convert any video length to a Live Photo?
You can input a video of any length, but only a maximum of 3 seconds will be used — iOS Live Photos contain 1.5 seconds of motion. All three methods let you choose which 3-second window to use. For best results on a lock screen, select a clip with smooth, subtle motion rather than fast cuts.
Will the converted Live Photo loop on the lock screen?
No. A Live Photo plays once — 1.5 seconds — each time you raise your iPhone to wake the screen or press the side button. It does not loop automatically. If you want a looping effect, apply the Loop effect inside the Photos app (swipe up on the Live Photo → select Loop), but note this only loops in the Photos app, not on the lock screen. See editing a Live Photo for the Loop and Bounce options.
Does the converted file work as a lock screen wallpaper on all iPhones?
Lock screen Live Photo wallpapers require iPhone XS or later running iOS 16 or newer. On older models (iPhone X and below), Live Photos still exist and play on press in Photos, but the lock screen Live animation is not supported. All three conversion methods produce files that work on any iPhone, but the animated lock screen feature is hardware and software limited.
No usable video clip to convert? You don't need one. Lockimate generates the motion for you from a single still photo and saves a native Live Photo — first wallpaper free.
